Ray and Ted's Most Excellent Adventures continue

Wanted to let you know that Ray will be leading a just-scheduled ASC dive trip to the Keys October 8-12! I suspect there might be an emphasis on wrecks – ya think?

I’ll be taking a Master Diver class to Dutch Springs the weekend of September 26-27, camping on-site at least Saturday night. All are welcome to join us. If you’ve never been to Dutch Springs, it’s an opportunity (excuse?) to come. We will be doing a night dive Saturday night.

Also, I will be at Lake Rawlings the weekend of October 24-25. It is the DUI Demo weekend – a great opportunity to try a dry suit, or the latest in undergarments if you already have a dry suit. I’ll be camping there Friday and Saturday night – any and all welcome to come for one last dive weekend or day before the end of the local dive season.

Call the shop if you want to get on Ray’s trip or to get a ticket for the DUI Demo. If you just want to dive at either Dutch Springs or Lake Rawlings, c’mon on down! Let me know if you’re coming so we can look for you.

ASC helps the U.S Naval Academy

The Magothy River Association has been partnering with NOAA and USNA for almost 10 years to provide dive training which prepares divers for dark water diving. This training also reviews scientific diving protocols which will be utilized when the trained midshipman divers meet with the MRA in April to dive in the Magothy River to collect data for ongoing scientific studies. read more at https://www.usna.com/SSLPage.aspx?pid=7485

Demo Day at Millbrook - Sept 27

Demo Day is one of our most popular events. Imagine you could take an entire department store worth of dive gear, move it to Millbrook for the day, and have manufacturer's representatives behind each counter.

Even better, you & your buddy can borrow equipment and give it a try in Millbrook, just a few feet away. This is a great way to "try before you buy". Each year this event draws divers from around the region. Many come for the chance to borrow test the latest gear, or for the opportunity to ask questions directly to the manufacturers. It's a great way to see what's new in the world of diving. There is no special fee for this event. Your Millbrook admission entitles you to lunch from the grill and use of demo equipment.

Notes:
Participants need to bring a complete set of Open Water equipment if they wish to dive.
Need rental equipment? We can help. If you've not yet rented equipment from ASC, stop by earlier in the week so that we can size you correctly.

DUI DOG Rally

Adventure Scuba traveled to Dutch Springs last weekend for the DUI Dog Rally. Three instructors/divemasters/volunteers and a number of ASC clients got to dive the latest in Dry Suits and under garments. Congratulations to the father and son team of Chris and Robbie Nicoll on their dry suit certification. If you missed this one there is another in September at Lake Rawlings, VA.

This is my first blog so please bear with me.

Adventure Scuba Company recently had 11 clients go with me to South Africa to do some diving and a photo safari and I'd like to give a little overview.

When we arrived in Cape Town we were a little disappointed to find out that we would not be able to ride the cable car up Table Mountain. We were also very sad to find out that the shark dives were cancelled. This was all due to inclement weather. We did make the best of it by going down to the Cape of Good Hope and seeing some penguins and also stopping by a cheetah reserve and petting a cheetah or two.

Finally we made it to Rocktail where we were able get some diving in. On day one the seas were as rough as could be. I can say that they were the biggest swells I have ever been diving in. We did however have a good dive but no one ventured back out for the second one, which I think the boat crews were very happy about.

The next two days of diving were much better and we saw some incredible aquatic life. The animals included a couple of whale sharks, white tips, black tips, grouper, puffers, clown fish, moray eels of all shapes, sizes and patterns. Two pretty unique sharks were also spotted by some, a guitar shark and a tiger shark about 11 feet in length.

Now comes the safari. I can say that I've seen some impressive things in my life but this is way up there on the OMG list. When we arrived at the Phinda Forest Lodge we were taken to the pool for about 30 minutes while our rooms were being prepared. That moment set the tone. It was an infinity pool that looked out on to the savanna, and cold drinks were being served. A wildebeest and some impalas were grazing off in the distance and a large nyala was within five feet of the pool munching on some trees.

After being shown to our rooms we had a fantastic lunch and met our guides, Brian and Richard. They took us on our game drives and showed us around for the next couple of days. These two were very knowledgeable and great to be around. Once they briefed us on the rules for encountering the animals we broke off into two vehicles and set out. Not long after leaving the living area we stopped and were shown some fresh elephant tracks. We were that told we would try and find the animal that left them.

From that point forward it was game on. We saw cheetahs, wildebeest, rhinos, zebras, giraffes, Cape water buffalo, monkeys, warthogs, elephants and lions among others.
